What’s going on Trainwrecks? Like the rest of us, I went through a period of my life where I wandered around aimlessly trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Actually, that’s been the vast majority of my life and I realized only recently, that I actually knew what I was supposed to be doing all along. That’s right, I’ve known all along what it is I need to be doing to make this career in Psychology a massive success. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t know each specific step by step checklist item in this process. That would be a rather absurd claim to make. What I can claim is I have figured out the two “secrets” of life. As I construct my own psychological paradigm, the inner truths within my discipline continue to reveal themselves. Psychology is INCREDIBLE!

Last week we discussed Five strategies to remain motivated. I really appreciate the input I got from Erick and I agree the lists my wife and I make often keep us on track better than anything else. I find my lists prepared in advance assist in keeping my mental workspace as uncluttered as possible so I can move from one objective to the next.

So here they are, the two secrets of life:
- Leadership – Leadership over our own lives and the ownership of every outcome that comes along.
- Fun – The positive experience available in every situation.
There they are for you. Write them down, take a picture or tattoo them across your chest. Leadership and fun are the two things we strive for the most in our lives yet they two of the most elusive experiences in our adult lives. When we were children we would run amok on the playground and were free to wander from group to group, wondering what other humans were interested in sharing an experience with us. When we were kids we were closer aligned to the secrets of life because if we wanted to learn a new skill or sport, not only were we free to do so, but others encouraged us and even offered assistance. We were free to roam until we found circumstances that suit us best. When we were children, we didn’t take life too serious and often spent all day anticipating seeing our best friend or a cute girl on the bus ride home. When we were younger we enjoyed running uphill and falling off a really high swing. Before we became adults, we dreamt we could be an astronaut or a ballerina. Trainwrecks, I believe if we re-evaluate our beliefs and standards, we can shift our focus back toward the most important things in life. The very secrets of life: Leadership & Fun.

Leadership in our own lives is US pursuing what WE want to do. Now don’t get me wrong, I believe very strongly in the strict and disciplined regimental lifestyle of the military. I believe in it so much so, I tell people it was the best thing to ever happen to my life after I graduated High School. I also believe the military is NOT for everyone. So much so, I would advise people to think long and hard about what they want to do with their life long before they ever duck walk in their underwear in front of a bunch of strangers. Leadership in our own lives means we don’t people-please. It means we acknowledge and respect the opinions of others but realize we are not required to respond or even care. Leadership is living for ourselves and not for or through anyone else. Leadership is not caring what opinion we think others have developed regarding us.

Stop giving a fuck what other people think about you
The pursuit of fun is the pursuit of happiness. It’s the pursuit of a connection with another person. Anyone. Fun is what naturally occurs amongst one or more persons who find amusement regardless of the circumstances. Ever wonder why light comedic relief is such a powerful leadership tool? Because when we see someone not taking things too seriously, we want to share that experience. Stress is tiresome while jovial behavior elicits comfort and camaraderie. When we were kids we were free to roam amongst others until we found someone else we found amusement while amongst. Fun is finding the positives of every situation, regardless of the circumstances. Trainwrecks, often we cannot control our circumstances. But we can control how we view them and what we do with them.
